Three women traveled to Beijing to learn about the plight of the world’s women. Their experience inspired them to create the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts in 1997. The premise was, and still is, to mobilize significant resources to address the pressing needs of women and girls in our region. More than $600,000 has been awarded to 64 organizations in four counties, helping link women and girls with their full potential. More than grantmaking, the Women’s Fund builds capacity. Organizations grow stronger, donors become more philanthropic.
The facts are compelling; women’s needs matter. Fully two-thirds of people living in poverty are female. A recent national poll of women reveals a set of priorities that includes reducing domestic violence and sexual assault, the need for equal pay for equal work and adequate childcare. These are among the critical issues addressed through our grantmaking, workshops and special events.
